It's the morning of Harvey's operation. They're going to remove a lump from his groin that he's known about for months but which he only recently showed to a doctor. The doctor said it could be a hernia. Or it could be lymphoma. That's Joyce's brother Tod, who'd dropped into town the week before, going to get her some coffee.

Harvey overexerted himself during his chemotherapy and now he's paying for it with a wicked case of shingles. Meanwhile, Joyce is expecting company -- a gaggle of teenagers from war-torn areas of the world that she met at a peace conference. They will soon be descending on Cleveland for a reunion and to bring some unexpected sunshine into Harvey's life.
